The problem is, I live in Las Vegas. Like anywhere, the people that grew up here are the most connected. BUT, here in Vegas, all the smart "natives" (there's a reservation just outside of town - I'm not talking about them.) ... ALL the smart "natives" leave town at 18 and DON'T come back. UNLV is not attracting many Valedictorians. ...but we have one hell of a golf team...
Now you might say, "So what?" So nothing. UNLV Golf kicks ass! Actually, I stumbled across some unexpected evidence of crony-ism. Hopefully, realizing the negative consequences that crony-ism can produce might make you pause a moment and hire the best guy next time, instead of hiring the guy who's mom works at the DMV (I'd hire DMV mom guy EVERY time. DMV? Shiiiit...)
Now you might say, "So what IS this negative evidence?" (ugh, the "Now you might say..." gimmick is getting old fast) and my answer would be... Shitty websites. More specifically, look at the largest local entities' websites and you might learn something. I sure did. I looked at the Clark County Courts site, Republic Services (garbage men), and Nevada Energy (electric). The internet is and forevermore will be, the primary interface for any organization and the public. As such, I assume entities of this size would spare no expense to develop the best website they can. All three suck. Let me count the ways...
First and foremost, they just look bad. Second, when you reach the homepage, you're not really there yet. They're set up like a site within a site. And then, when you try to pay them for something, you conclude that their web designer was the son of the CEO's secretary. When you are a designer worth your salt, you can include the ability to accept payments from your visitors. That's the whole point in the end, isn't it? When you're a design hack, with a semi-legit, living room website design company, and your only experience was designing your own company's website, you aren't competent enough to ensure transactions will be secure so you have to farm payments out to a third party. That's the tell-tale sign of a retarded nephew web design contract. You'll also see unnecessary flexibility in the user interface due to the asshole using a generic site builder so it has allowances for capabilities beyond this particular application.
It's a sad state of affairs really. These are the flagship entities of our city. As new residents start setting up their online lives they go, "What the fuck? This city is being run by retards!?!?" Within the 5 years allotted by their interest only, balloon payment mortgage, THEY'RE OUTTA HERE. At least the smart ones are. Just like the smart natives.
My point is... HELP!!!!! I LOVE the city of Las Vegas. I HATE my fellow citizens. They're all 2nd rate athletes and numbskulls. (I say 2nd rate with the exclusion of the combat sports - Vegans are skilled and vicious.) But don't tell me a golfer is a 1st rate athlete. Even our great tennis and baseball players - no, not 1st rate. Top of the line are found in football and basketball and ours are too dumb to be ranked among the elite. If they were smart they'd be at UCLA or U. Mass or somewhere; basically anywhere but UNLV (& AZ State - you bitches!). Just word associate if you doubt me... UNLV and Sports... whats next? Thugs and Criminals. BUT THEY'RE MY THUGS AND CRIMINALS, SO FUCK YOU! GO REBELS!!! Anyway, if you're living in LV and you're smart, please stay?!?! Help me enlighten the population!
